The United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement to expand the American military presence on the Arctic island, according to US President Donald Trump. The arrangement keeps Greenland under Danish sovereignty while giving Washington a broader role in the island’s security.

Trump said the agreement would provide the United States with permanent access to Greenland for security purposes and would prevent American adversaries from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments on the island without US approval. The agreement is expected to be signed by the three governments during the United Nations General Assembly next week.

The arrangement still requires parliamentary approval in Denmark and Greenland before it can come into effect. Danish and Greenlandic leaders have said the agreement recognises Greenland’s sovereignty and its right to self determination, while US officials have presented the arrangement as addressing long standing American security concerns in the Arctic.

The agreement follows months of diplomatic tensions after Trump repeatedly called for the United States to acquire Greenland and raised the possibility of using force. Denmark and Greenland had consistently rejected the idea of selling the territory.
