Britain has agreed to provide limited defensive assistance to Saudi Arabia following an increase in attacks by Iran backed Houthi forces. The support was requested by Riyadh after Houthi attacks on Saudi territory intensified amid the wider regional conflict.
As part of the arrangement, Britain will send one Voyager aircraft to provide air to air refuelling support for Saudi aircraft. The deployment is expected to begin in the coming days and will initially remain limited in duration.
Britain and Saudi Arabia have maintained close defence ties for several decades, with the UK also being a major supplier of military equipment to the kingdom. Earlier this year, Britain deployed its Sky Sabre air defence system to Saudi Arabia to help protect the country from potential Iranian missile attacks during the conflict involving Iran.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the assistance would be provided for a limited period and would remain under review. He also said Britain was contributing to wider efforts to support regional stability and help maintain the security of important routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest arrangement follows Saudi Arabia's request for assistance from partner countries as attacks involving missiles and drones have increased in the region. Britain has described its support as defensive and linked to broader efforts to protect regional security and keep vital routes open.
