The International Day of Sign Languages is being observed today to highlight the vital role of sign languages in protecting and promoting the human rights of Deaf people.
This year’s theme, “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights,” focuses on ensuring that Deaf people can fully exercise their rights across every area of life. The theme also highlights the importance of access to information and services through national sign languages.
This year’s observance has added significance as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the World Federation of the Deaf and the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The International Week of Deaf People is also being observed until September 27, with attention on inclusive education, accessibility, Deaf culture and meaningful participation in society.
The United Nations General Assembly officially designated September 23 as the International Day of Sign Languages in 2017.
