External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar co chaired the L.69 Consultative Ministerial Interaction on reform of the United Nations Security Council alongside Saint Lucia’s Foreign Minister Alva Baptiste.
During the meeting, Jaishankar said countries of the Global South are facing the effects of major changes taking place around the world, while the United Nations has not always been able to meet expectations.
He highlighted the need to update the Security Council, pointing to its difficulties in responding effectively to ongoing conflicts and challenges to international peace and security. He said continued delays in reform allow longstanding inequalities within the international system to remain.
Jaishankar also said members of the L.69 group and the C.10 are working together to maintain momentum for Security Council reform.
The L.69 is a cross regional group of developing countries that supports comprehensive and urgent changes to the structure of the United Nations Security Council. The C.10 is a group of 10 African countries established under the African Union to advance the continent’s common position on Security Council reform.
