Taiwan has expanded its maritime patrol operations around the Pratas Islands in the South China Sea following increased activity by Chinese vessels in the surrounding waters.

The Taiwan Coast Guard said its patrol and enforcement capabilities in the area have been significantly strengthened. A newly built patrol boat has been stationed at the islands following the completion of a wharf project in July.

Larger patrol vessels are also being deployed regularly to monitor the surrounding waters. The Pratas Islands are controlled by Taiwan and are located more than 400 kilometres from the island itself.

Taiwan has also reported intercepting nine Chinese fishing boats around the Pratas area since the beginning of this year.
