Tesla’s supervised self driving system has come under fresh scrutiny after tests in Belgium raised concerns about its handling of speed limits and road rules.
A Belgian road safety group tested the system over three days, covering about 400 kilometres. The tests found instances where the software exceeded posted speed limits in areas with 20 kilometre per hour and 30 kilometre per hour restrictions.
The group also reported cases in which the system attempted to pass cyclists on roads where such manoeuvres were not permitted. It further found that the software sometimes displayed speed limits higher than the actual limits on the road.
The findings have prompted calls for regulators to review existing approvals for the system. The technology still requires drivers to remain attentive and responsible for following traffic rules.
