India has significantly expanded its mobile phone manufacturing capacity, with domestic production now meeting 99.2% of the country’s mobile phone demand.
The growth has helped India move from being a major importer of mobile phones to becoming a net exporter. The country is also now the world’s second largest mobile phone manufacturer by volume.
Government initiatives supporting electronics manufacturing have contributed to higher production, exports and domestic value addition. Investment across the mobile manufacturing ecosystem has also increased substantially under the Production Linked Incentive programme.
Domestic value addition in mobile manufacturing reached 23% in FY 2023 to 2024. Mobile phones have also emerged as one of India’s leading export products, reflecting the rapid expansion of the country’s electronics manufacturing sector.
A new Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme with an outlay of ₹62,500 crore is aimed at further increasing production, strengthening local supply chains and improving India’s competitiveness in the global electronics industry.
