India has retained the Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, after finishing with a silver medal in the Open section and a bronze in the Women’s section. This marked India's third consecutive win of the combined trophy.
The Indian Open team drew 2 to 2 with Hungary in the final round and secured silver on the tie break. The women’s team also drew 2 to 2 with Georgia and finished with the bronze medal.
Six Indian players also received individual medals during the competition. The achievements included performances from B. Savitha, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, Koneru Humpy, D. Gukesh and R. Praggnanandhaa.
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan congratulated the Indian players, highlighting their talent, dedication and competitive spirit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the team's determination and expressed hope that the success would encourage more young people to take up chess and perform well.
