Indian stock markets came under strong selling pressure during afternoon trading, with the benchmark indices falling around 1.3 percent.

The Sensex dropped 956 points to 72,939, while the Nifty declined 306 points to 22,835 at the time of the latest reports.

The broader market also witnessed significant losses. The Nifty Midcap 100 index fell 1.4 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index declined 1.6 percent.

All major sectoral indices were trading lower, reflecting widespread selling across the market.
