Apple Pay has officially launched in India through a partnership with Axis Bank, marking the payment service’s entry into one of the world’s largest digital payment markets. At launch, eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit card holders can add their cards to Apple Pay.
The service is available on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, allowing users to make contactless payments at supported stores, apps and websites. Payments can be authenticated through Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode.
The initial rollout does not support cards on India’s RuPay network. Users can add eligible cards through the Axis Bank app or directly through Apple Wallet. Apple Pay uses tokenised payment information and does not store the actual card number on the device or Apple’s servers.
