Defending champions Portugal continued their perfect run in the Nations League with a 2 to 1 victory over Norway at home on Sunday. The result secured Portugal a place in the quarter finals scheduled for March and strengthened their position at the top of Group A4.
Goncalo Ramos scored the winning goal 11 minutes from full time, helping Portugal secure a top two finish. The victory moved Portugal six points clear of second placed Denmark, who defeated Wales 1 to 0.
Portugal entered the match following Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from the squad last week. Despite his absence, the team had already defeated Denmark away from home and continued its winning run against Norway.
Norway opened the scoring in the 36th minute through Kristoffer Ajer. The centre back produced a dipping half volley from the edge of the penalty area to put the visitors ahead.
Portugal responded quickly, with Joao Cancelo finding the equaliser just two minutes later with a powerful effort.
Ramos then completed the comeback late in the match. Joao Felix headed the ball across the goal, allowing Ramos to score off his calf and give Portugal the lead.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus said the team needed strong technical quality to overcome Norway. He acknowledged that the performance was not at the same level as the previous match against Denmark but said the victory and qualification were the most important outcomes.
Jesus also said he had strong confidence in the squad and admitted that he had not expected the team to win all four of its opening matches.
