Hindu communities across Bangladesh are observing Mahalaya today with prayers, religious ceremonies and devotional programmes. The occasion marks the end of Pitru Paksha, a period devoted to remembering ancestors, and the beginning of Devi Paksha, the auspicious fortnight leading up to Durga Puja.
In Dhaka, the Dhakeshwari National Temple is holding a special programme featuring prayers and til tarpan offerings in memory of departed ancestors. Ramna Kali Mandir is also organising celebrations to mark the occasion. Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi attended the ceremony.
Devotees are observing Mahalaya by offering prayers and listening to the recitation of the Sree Sree Chandi, along with the traditional Mahishasura Mardini programme. The occasion marks the start of the countdown to Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival celebrated by Bangladesh’s Hindu community.
The five day festival will officially begin with Maha Shashthi on October 16 and conclude with the immersion of Durga idols on Bijoya Dashami on October 21.
