India’s Putul Sonowal has secured the country’s first ever medal at the World Bowls Champion of Champions being held in Barham, Australia. The 43 year old athlete from Assam reached the semi finals of the men’s singles competition after defeating Singapore’s Harriman Yuen in the quarter final.
Sonowal, who serves in the Assam Police, has established himself as a prominent Indian player in lawn bowls. He recently won gold in the men’s singles category at the 2026 Asian Lawn Bowls Championship, adding to his international achievements.
At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Sonowal also registered a notable victory over Canada’s Ryan Bester, a three time Commonwealth Games medallist and former world outdoor champion. The men’s singles contest was decided in a tie break after both players won one set each, with Sonowal ultimately claiming the win.
