Nuvacore Seeks $2.5 Billion Valuation as Investors Bet on AI Chip Demand

Nuvacore, a young semiconductor startup backed by Sequoia Capital, is seeking to raise hundreds of millions of dollars at an estimated valuation of $2.5 billion, according to people familiar with the fundraising process. The California based company is developing a new central processing unit designed for data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure, despite not having launched a commercial product yet.

Founded around six months ago, Nuvacore is entering the market at a time when demand for computing power is increasing rapidly. The expansion of AI chatbots, automated software agents and other data intensive applications has created a greater need for powerful processors that can manage workloads and coordinate specialised AI chips.

The proposed valuation of $2.5 billion had not previously been publicly reported. Earlier reports indicated that the company was seeking to raise at least $200 million. However, the latest funding round has not been completed, and both the final valuation and the amount raised could change before the deal closes.

Nuvacore is pursuing a different approach to processor development. Rather than selecting an established chip architecture at the beginning, the company plans to design the core functionality of its processor first. It aims to make decisions about the architecture later in the development process.

The company believes this strategy could help its engineers avoid some of the limitations associated with existing chip designs and optimise performance for the computing tasks commonly carried out in data centres and AI infrastructure.

The market is currently dominated by established semiconductor companies such as Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, which rely on the x86 architecture. Arm based processors have also gained traction through customised chips developed for major cloud computing companies, including Amazon and Microsoft.

Nuvacore was founded by Gerard Williams, John Bruno and Ram Srinivasan. Williams previously worked as an executive at Apple and founded Nuvia, a chip design company that Qualcomm acquired for $1.4 billion in 2021.

Earlier this year, Nuvacore announced an initial funding round led by Sequoia Capital. Its latest fundraising effort reflects renewed investor interest in semiconductor businesses developing hardware for AI applications, even before they bring products to market.

Investment in the sector has also increased significantly. According to Crunchbase data, semiconductor startups attracted approximately $10.7 billion during the first five months of 2026, compared with $12.2 billion raised globally throughout 2025.

Established chipmakers are also benefiting from rising demand. Intel has reported difficulties meeting chip demand, while AMD has highlighted stronger processor sales. Nvidia has entered the central processor market with its Vera chip, with chief executive Jensen Huang projecting $20 billion in sales from the product during the company's current fiscal year.

The growing need for computing infrastructure has created opportunities for new semiconductor companies, but developing advanced processors remains expensive and technically challenging. Nuvacore's ability to turn its proposed design into a commercial product will be an important factor in determining whether it can meet investor expectations.
