A group of US Senators from both political parties has raised legal concerns over President Donald Trump’s decision to permit diesel imports from Russia. They argued that the move may violate a 2022 law that prohibits such trade until Moscow brings its war in Ukraine to an end. The lawmakers also questioned the administration for allegedly failing to consult Congress or provide the explanation required under the law.
Trump announced the decision after speaking by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. He said an agreement had been reached for Russia to immediately supply 300,000 tonnes of diesel for the United States and the international market.
The announcement came weeks after the US Congress passed the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act by a large majority. The legislation gives the President the authority to impose broad sanctions on Moscow, along with tariffs of 100 per cent on Russia’s five largest trading partners in the oil and gas sector.
