Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister P.K. Mishra has highlighted the importance of collecting and analysing reliable data to support evidence based policymaking, especially as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important. Speaking at a conclave organised by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, he described data as a key foundation for India’s future development.
Mishra stressed the need for stronger cooperation between the Central and state governments to improve the quality and consistency of statistical information. He called for coordinated data collection methods, uniform definitions and standard classification systems across different regions.
He also pointed out that information collected at the state and district levels is essential for preparing national economic statistics, including estimates of gross domestic product. According to him, accurate and consistent data can help policymakers better understand economic conditions and make informed decisions.
Mishra noted that India has experienced considerable changes over the past decade, particularly in infrastructure development, digital public services, financial inclusion and entrepreneurship. He emphasised that reliable statistics are necessary to measure these developments and evaluate the impact of government initiatives.
He further stated that the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 requires clear and measurable goals. Reliable data, he said, will help track the country’s progress towards building a prosperous, inclusive, innovative and sustainable nation.
