Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a speech at the closing of the celebrations honoring Lachit Barphukan's 400th birthday on November 25, 2022, at 11 a.m. in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister, opened the three-day festival, which took place from November 23 to November 25 and highlighted, among other things, the life and accomplishments of the Ahom dynasty and Lachit Barphukan. Through speeches, dances, performances, songs, and musical performances, the gathering celebrated the bravery and sacrifices of the unsung heroes.
According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief minister of Assam, the bravery of the Ahoms and Lachit Barphukan dynasties and other similar ones were overlooked by the Indian history. He asserted that this initiative will make it easier for people to recognize the nation's true heroes. As per Mr. Sarma, several efforts are being made to showcase Lachit Barphukan's valor from a national standpoint.
Lachit Barphukan, a great general of the royal army of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam (24 November 1622 – 25 April 1672) defeated the Mughals and brought an end to their ever-expanding ambitions under Aurangzeb. The Assamese warriors under Lachit Barphukan's leadership defeated the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, crushing and humiliating them. One of the most heroic military accomplishments of resistance in our nation's history was the valiant struggle of Lachit Barphukan and his troops.
The prime minister has strived consistently to honor the unsung heroes in a respectful and deserving manner. On the occasion of Lachit Diwas, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, greeted the nation by tweeting:
"Greetings on Lachit Diwas. This Lachit Diwas is special because we mark the 400th birth anniversary of the great Lachit Borphukan. He epitomized unparalleled courage. He placed the well-being of people above everything else and was a just as well as visionary leader."
