Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, has presented cheques for Rs 1 lakh to each of the 1,296 families living in the Doloo Tea Estate in the Cachar district.
This area was the centre of controversy earlier this year when property was being acquired for a green field airport.
The checks were distributed on Tuesday night in Silchar, per a statement from the chief minister's office.
During the programme, Sarma promised that his administration will also give the Doloo Tea Estate's casual workers financial help in the amount of Rs 1 lakh each.
