Sudipto Sen's latest film, The Kerala Story, has managed to earn more than ₹8 crores on its opening day at the domestic box office, despite the controversy it found itself engulfed in. The film features Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani in lead roles, and has been written and directed by Sudipto Sen. The makers of the film claim that it reveals the events behind the disappearance of approximately 32,000 women in Kerala, who were converted and deployed in terror missions across India and the world. The film is backed by Sunshine Pictures Private Limited, founded by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, who serves as the producer, creative director, and co-writer.
Film analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter on Saturday to praise the film's success, saying that it has "hit the ball out of the stadium" and that its day-one numbers are "an eye-opener for the entire industry". The film has received significant attention due to its trailer claiming that 32,000 girls from Kerala had joined the terrorist group, ISIS. However, the producers have added a disclaimer to the movie stating that it is a fictionalized and dramatized version of events and that the film does not claim the accuracy or factuality of historic events.
Speaking about the film at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Sudipto Sen said that he hopes people will watch it and that it has been a long seven-year journey to complete the film. Despite the controversy, theatre owners in Kerala have said that bookings for the film have been average and that they do not expect any protests against it. Suresh Shenoy, who runs eight theatres in Kochi, including the Shenoy's multiplex, said that the film has received average bookings as expected from a "small Hindi film like this".
