Prime Minister Modi Sets Off on Multilateral Summit Tour to Japan, Australia, and Papua New Guinea

Prime Minister Modi embarked on a tour to Japan, Australia, and Papua New Guinea to attend significant multilateral summits, including the G7 and Quad. The first leg of his trip will take him to Japan for the G7 Summit, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with leaders representing some of the world's most powerful democracies. The G7 consists of member countries such as the United States, Japan, France, the UK, Germany, Canada, and Italy, with the European Union functioning as a full member.

India, along with partner countries like Australia, Indonesia, and South Korea, has received an invitation to participate in the summit. As India currently holds the G20 presidency this year, its presence at the G7 is of significant importance, as stated by the Prime Minister in his departure statement. "I eagerly anticipate engaging in discussions with the G7 countries and other invited partners on the challenges that the world confronts and the collective effort required to address them," expressed PM Modi as he set off for Japan. His visit to Japan will take place from 19th to 21st May.

Additionally, Japan is set to host the highly anticipated Quad Leaders Summit. Originally planned to be held in Australia on 24th May, the venue was changed due to ongoing talks between the Biden administration and opposition Republicans in the United States regarding raising the debt ceilings. All four leaders from the Quad countries will be attending the G7 Summit, making Japan a suitable alternative location for the Quad meeting.

Following his engagements in Japan, Prime Minister Modi will proceed to Papua New Guinea (PNG), where he will hold a meeting with leaders from Pacific Island countries. This visit will mark his first-ever visit to Papua New Guinea by an Indian Prime Minister. Modi will co-host the 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC III Summit) on 22nd May 2023, alongside Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea. The invitation to the summit has been accepted by all 14 Pacific Island Countries (PIC). FIPIC was initiated during Modi's visit to Fiji in 2014, and he looks forward to engaging with PIC Leaders on various shared issues such as climate change, sustainable development, capacity building, health, infrastructure, and economic development.
