Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Papua New Guinea on Sunday to attend the 3rd India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit, where he addressed leaders from 14 Pacific island countries. In his speech, he expressed disappointment with the developed nations, accusing them of failing to offer support when needed. Without naming specific countries, PM Modi criticized those he trusted but did not stand by India during times of crisis.

During the summit, PM Modi emphasized the vulnerability of the Global South, highlighting the challenges faced by developing nations. He pointed out disruptions in the supply chain of essential commodities such as fuel, food, fertilizer, and pharmaceuticals, and expressed his disappointment that the support he expected was not forthcoming. He acknowledged that the Global South, including the Pacific Island countries, bore the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, as they already faced existing challenges related to climate change, natural disasters, poverty, hunger, and healthcare. PM Modi expressed gratitude for India's unwavering support to its friendly Pacific Island nations during difficult times.

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, James Marape, commended India's leadership on the global stage and pledged support for India's initiatives. Marape recognized the Pacific Island countries as victims of global power dynamics and affirmed his commitment to stand behind India's leadership in international forums.

PM Modi's visit to Papua New Guinea is part of his ongoing three-nation tour, coinciding with the G7 summit in Hiroshima. This visit holds significance as it marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited the island nation, underscoring India's efforts to strengthen bilateral ties with the Pacific Island countries.
