India Emerges as a Major Player in Global Film Tourism Market, Drafts Strategy for Growth

India stood out as a significant contributor to the global film tourism market in 2022, producing over 1,500 films. With an estimated market value of approximately $60 billion, the film tourism industry has a profound impact on travel decisions as it inspires people to explore the locations showcased on the silver screen. This, in turn, boosts positive recall for these destinations and drives tourism.

The immense success of India-centric films and productions has attracted international studios, who now actively choose to shoot a substantial portion of their movies within the country. India offers a plethora of talented filmmaking crews, actors, picturesque locations, and world-class production capabilities, all at highly competitive costs. Consequently, film productions not only enhance the visual appeal of these locations but also bring substantial economic benefits such as income, investments, job creation, and tax revenues, contributing to the state and the country's overall economic development.

Taking into account these factors, a draft strategy has been proposed, focusing on the following pillars: national and state-level coordination, country and destination branding, destination infrastructure development, global bilateral film tourism treaties, international-scale skilling, financial incentives, post-film travel, and tourism outreach, and structural and governance mechanisms.

Nakul Anand, Chairman of the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH), expressed gratitude to the government for accepting their proposed inputs for the draft film tourism strategy. An integrated effort across all ministries and departments is required as the film tourism segment impacts various stakeholders, including hoteliers, tourist transporters, travel agents, tour operators, restaurants, and destinations. The presidents of all ten national member associations, along with their executive committees, will contribute their inputs to finalize the film tourism policy soon.
