ETS Announces Significant Changes to GRE General Test, Including Reduced Duration and Faster Score Reporting

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has revealed important updates to the GRE General Test, with implementation starting in September. One of the major changes is the reduction in test duration, with the new version taking less than two hours to complete, approximately half the time of the current test. Additionally, test takers will receive their official scores within 10 days, a notable improvement compared to the previous 15-day waiting period.

Several modifications have been made to the test structure. The "analyze an argument" task in the Analytical Writing section will be removed, and the number of questions in both the quantitative and verbal reasoning sections will be reduced. Furthermore, the "unscored" sections will no longer be included, as stated by the ETS.

Amit Sevak, CEO of ETS, emphasized the organization's customer-centric approach to implementing these changes. He stated, "The changes we are announcing today underscore the emphasis we place on keeping our customers at the center of all that we do. As we continue to introduce product innovations, we are committed to balancing two things - maintaining rigor and validity, while improving the test-taker experience."

Apart from administering the GRE General Test, ETS is also responsible for conducting the English language test TOEFL. The GRE General Test is widely recognized and utilized for admission to graduate and professional programs, including business and law. It evaluates essential skills such as verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing, which are crucial for success in most graduate-level programs.GRE scores play a vital role in holistic admissions processes due to their unique contribution as a research-based, fair, and objective measure of cognitive abilities.
