In a significant turn of events in Maharashtra politics, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) under the leadership of Sharad Pawar has taken action by disqualifying nine rebel MLAs, including Ajit Pawar. These MLAs had recently been sworn in as ministers in the Shinde-Fadnavis government. Meanwhile, in the ongoing debate regarding the Leader of the Opposition, Sharad Pawar has acknowledged the Congress party's valid demand to appoint their leader, considering they have the highest number of MLAs.
It is noteworthy that the Maharashtra legislative assembly has a total strength of 288 members, with a minimum of 145 required to win a trust vote. Following Eknath Shinde and his supporters' rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray in 2022, the alliance between Shinde and Fadnavis has grown to 164. With Ajit Pawar's move, the NDA government's seat count is expected to exceed the 200-mark. However, the MahaVikas Aghadi alliance, comprising the Congress, NCP, and Shiv Sena (UBT), has been reduced to 74 seats. Within the MVA alliance, the distribution stands at 16 seats for Shiv Sena (UBT), 13 seats for NCP under Sharad Pawar's leadership, and 45 seats for Congress MLAs.
