After speculations and a long wait, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), on Tuesday, September 26, named Bangladesh’s 15-member squad for the World Cup 2023 to be played in India from October 5 to November 19.
The squad was named after the conclusion of the third and final ODI between the Tigers and New Zealand at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. On Monday night, the BCB president, Najmul Hasan Papon, had a meeting with skipper Shakib Al Hasan and head coach Chandika Hathurusingha.
Thereafter, Papon met former skipper Mashrafe Mortaza at the BCB office on Tuesday afternoon before eventually finalising the squad. Bangladesh, in the meantime, also unveiled their jersey for the World Cup.
Earlier, reports suggested that there were doubts over Tamim Iqbal’s selection in the team due to concerns over his fitness. The southpaw, in the end, did not find a place in the squad.
Recently, the veteran left-handed batter returned from his injury layoff and played in the first ODI against the Black Caps before being rested. Tamim has faced issues with his back and reversed his decision to retire from international cricket earlier this year after a request from the honourable Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.
If reports are to be believed, Bangladesh’s logistics manager, Nafees Iqbal, also Tamim Iqbal’s elder brother, has resigned from his position and would not be going to India.
Instead, the Tigers went in with Tanzim Hasan Tamim as the one who could open the batting for them in the World Cup. Najmul Hossain Shanto, who missed out of the Asia Cup 2023 and returned in the third ODI against New Zealand, has been included.
