Now Sharia courts not allowed to function: Madras High Court

The unauthorised Sharia courts functioning in Mosque cannot function any more in Tamil Nadu, Madras High Court said. In a big verdict, the court has banned such institutions and ordered to take action in one month.

"If a place of worship - whether it be temple, mosque or church - is used for purposes other than prayers, and more specifically to create extra-constitutional forums, certainly the authorities are duty-bound to take action against them," said the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M Sundar.

The court ordered on petition filed by an NRI seeking ban on 'Makka Masjid Shariat Council' on the Anna Salai in Chennai and other such organisations in Tamil Nadu.
