Congress plays safe in Punjab, announces 77 candidates for Assembly polls

The Congress Electoral Committee, headed by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, has announced second list of its 16 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Punjab.

With today's announcement, the Congress has declared 77 candidates for a total of 117 Assembly consistencies in the state. The party is likely to announce candidates for the remaining seats in next few days.

"Only credible and winnable candidates have been given the tickets, as with the first list," Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh said.

Surprisingly, the Congress party is playing safe by deploying credible candidates in the state. The party is trying to avoid all sorts of controversies around the selection of the candidates. The big ones like former BJP and Akali Dal MLAs -- Navjot Kaur Sidhu, Pargat Singh, Inderbir Bolaria -- were not in the list.

Moreover, Akali-turned-Congressmen Deepinder Dhillon and Harry Mann also did not find any mention in the list that Congress party has announced.
